🏃‍♀️ Health and Physical Education
at Torbanlea State School

At Torbanlea State School, we believe that healthy bodies and healthy minds go hand in hand. Our Health and Physical Education (HPE) program is designed to build students’ confidence, skills and knowledge so they can lead active, healthy and balanced lives — now and into the future.

Our HPE program is grounded in the Australian Curriculum Version 9.0 and aligns with the P–6 learning sequence, ensuring a consistent, high‑quality learning experience for every child.

📘 Our HPE Curriculum

The Health and Physical Education curriculum is organised around two interconnected strands:

💬 Personal, Social and Community Health

Students develop:

  • Health knowledge and understanding
  • Decision‑making and problem‑solving skills
  • Respectful relationships and personal responsibility
  • Confidence to make positive choices about their wellbeing

🏃 Movement and Physical Activity

Students build:

  • Fundamental movement skills
  • Physical competence and confidence
  • Teamwork, cooperation and fair play
  • A lifelong love of being active

Together, these strands help students develop health literacy, resilience and the skills needed to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

👩‍🏫 Specialist HPE Teaching

Health and Physical Education lessons are delivered every Friday by our specialist HPE teacher, Miss Requeal Cox.

Through her expertise, students engage in:

  • ✅ Structured movement skill development
  • ✅ Games‑based and hands‑on learning
  • ✅ Explicit teaching aligned to curriculum achievement standards

Lessons are carefully designed to integrate physical skill development with learning that supports:

  • Health knowledge
  • Positive decision‑making
  • Respectful relationships
  • Personal and social responsibility

This balanced approach strengthens our proud sporting tradition while fostering a love of physical activity and promoting lifelong health and wellbeing.

🏅 Sport and Physical Activity Opportunities

We provide a wide range of inclusive sporting opportunities for students of all ages and abilities.

From structured curriculum lessons to extracurricular and interschool sport, we aim to create a supportive environment where every child can participate and succeed.

Students may have the opportunity to represent Torbanlea State School in:

  • 🏃 Athletics
  • 🌳 Cross Country
  • ⚽ Soccer
  • 🏐 Netball
  • 🏉 Rugby

These experiences strengthen movement skills while reinforcing important values such as teamwork, resilience, respect and fair play.

🤝 Visitors and Community Partnerships

Torbanlea State School values strong partnerships that enrich our HPE program and broaden students’ experiences.

Through initiatives such as the Sporting Schools program, students work with external registered providers offering fun, engaging and inclusive programs for all learners.

Our partnerships include:

  • 🏉 AFL Sports Institute
  • 🎳 Burgowan Bowls
  • 🎾 Tennis Australia coaching sessions
  • 🩰 Queensland Ballet workshops

These experiences give students access to expert coaching, exposure to new sports and activities, and opportunities to discover interests and talents in a supportive setting.

🟢🔴🔵 Sporting Houses

Our three sporting houses reflect local heritage and community identity:

🟢 Burgowan – Green

Named after the nearby locality historically connected to the Burrum coal mining district.

🔴 Robertson – Red

Honouring James Robertson, the early coal mine engineer who named Torbanlea after Torbane Hill in Scotland during the town’s 1880s mining establishment.

🔵 Stafford – Blue

Reflecting the Stafford Estate area within the broader Torbanlea community and its rural roots.

All students from Prep to Year 6 are allocated to a sporting house, with siblings placed together.
The highlight of the house system is our annual Athletics Carnival, where students proudly compete in their house colours.

🎉 School Carnivals

Each year, Torbanlea State School hosts two major sporting carnivals:

  • 🏃 Term 1, Week 8 – Cross Country Carnival (Years 3–6)
  • 🏟 Term 2, Week (to be confirmed) – Athletics Carnival (Prep–Year 6)

These carnivals provide opportunities for students aged 10–12 to qualify for district representation, with strong performances potentially leading to regional selection trials.

🏊‍♂️ Swimming and Water Safety Program

In alignment with Queensland curriculum expectations, all students participate in a Term 4 Swim and Survive program.

The program is delivered by qualified coaches from Mako’s Swim School at the Howard State School Pool and focuses on:

  • 🌊 Water safety awareness
  • 🛟 Personal survival skills
  • 🏊 Confident and capable swimming

These are essential life skills for children growing up in Queensland’s coastal environment.

🌟 Our Commitment

Through quality teaching, diverse sporting opportunities and strong community partnerships, Torbanlea State School is committed to:

  • Promoting healthy and active lifestyles
  • Developing confident, capable and resilient learners
  • Encouraging teamwork, sportsmanship and personal responsibility

We are proud to offer an HPE program that supports the whole child — physically, socially and emotionally.
