🀄 Langu​ages (Chinese) at Torbanlea State School

At Torbanlea State School, we value language learning as a powerful way to build communication skills, cultural understanding and global awareness.

Students in Years 4 to 6 learn Chinese each Friday with Mrs Natalie Chan as part of our Languages program. Our curriculum is aligned with the Australian Curriculum: Chinese – Second Language Learner Pathway (F–10) and focuses on meaningful communication, cultural understanding and real‑world language use.

Chinese is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. Learning Chinese supports students to think creatively, communicate with confidence and understand perspectives different from their own.

Learning Chinese helps students to:

Drawing on the Australian Curriculum’s focus on communicating and interacting in Chinese, students engage in learning experiences that include:

  • Share ideas, preferences and personal experiences
  • Use spoken Chinese and simple written language in meaningful contexts

🔍 Obtaining and Using Information

Students:

  • Locate and process information from a range of Chinese language texts and sources
  • Interpret meaning and key ideas
  • Convey information clearly and appropriately to known audiences

✍️ Creating Informative and Imaginative Texts

Students create:

  • Spoken and written texts for specific purposes and audiences
  • Short messages, descriptions and creative responses
  • Texts using learned characters, phrases and sentence structures

🔤 Understanding Language Patterns and Features

Students explore how Chinese works as a language system, including:

  • Tone syllables and pronunciation
  • Character formation and meaning
  • The role of Pinyin as a phonetic system to support reading and speaking

🧧 Recognising Cultural Connections

Students identify and explore:

  • How language reflects culture, traditions and social practices
  • Cultural similarities and differences
  • How to apply cultural understanding in intercultural communication

These learning areas reflect the Australian Curriculum’s intent that students create, interpret and exchange meaning through Chinese in authentic and engaging contexts.


🎲 Engaging and Interactive Learning

Chinese lessons at Torbanlea State School are active, engaging and enjoyable, supporting students to learn language through experience.

Lessons may include:
