Camps and Excursions at Torbanlea State School

Purpose of Camps and Excursions

At Torbanlea State School, we recognise that camps and excursions are an essential extension of student learning. According to the Queensland Department of Education, school camps and excursions allow students to participate in curriculum‑related activities outside the normal school routine, providing practical experiences that deepen understanding and broaden engagement with learning. These experiences also help students develop teamwork, leadership, social skills, resilience, and a sense of connection to the wider community.

Camps and excursions are carefully planned and managed to ensure student safety, wellbeing, and meaningful educational outcomes. They form part of a school’s duty of care and must follow strict departmental procedures, including risk assessment and parental consent.

Excursions at Torbanlea State School

Throughout the school year, Torbanlea State School offers a wide variety of excursions linked directly to the Australian Curriculum learning areas, including:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Humanities and Social Sciences (History & Geography)
  • Health & Physical Education
  • The Arts (Visual Art, Dance, Drama, Media, and Music)
  • Technologies

These excursions are planned to enrich classroom learning and help students connect theoretical concepts with authentic, real‑world experiences. All excursions are offered to students and their families throughout the year, and parents are provided with information regarding purpose, activities, travel arrangements, supervision, and costs before giving consent.

Most excursions involve a cost to cover transport, entry fees, or program expenses. Parents always have the choice to approve their child’s participation.

Year 6 Camp

Each year, students in Year 6 have the opportunity to participate in the Year 6 School Camp—a memorable culminating experience that helps develop independence, resilience, teamwork, and leadership before transition to high school.

Location and Activities

The camp is held at a local, accredited school camp facility somewhere between Bundaberg and the Sunshine Coast, depending on availability and program suitability. These facilities offer a range of structured, supervised activities such as:

  • Outdoor adventure challenges
  • Environmental education programs
  • Leadership and team‑building sessions
  • Night programs and group activities

All activities are supported by the camp venue’s completed and approved risk assessments, as required under Queensland’s school excursions procedure and CARA (Curriculum Activity Risk Assessment) guidelines.

Costs and Fundraising

There is a cost associated with attending Year 6 Camp. However, Torbanlea State School works actively to make camp affordable:

  • The Year 6 teacher and students participate in fundraising activities throughout the year to reduce expenses for families.

  • Grants or community contributions (when available) may also help offset travel or activity costs.

Parents receive detailed camp information, including costs, activities, supervision ratios, consent requirements, medical information needs, and safety procedures before confirming their child’s participation.

Safety, Planning, and Compliance

Torbanlea State School follows all Department of Education policies and procedures for excursions and camps, ensuring:

  • Comprehensive excursion and camp planning
  • Detailed risk assessments for all activities
  • Qualified staff supervision
  • Appropriate student‑to‑adult ratios
  • Medical, accessibility, and inclusion needs are considered for all students

Camps and excursions are conducted under strict departmental guidelines to support safe, high‑quality educational experiences for every student.
