💡 Technologies at Torbanlea State School

Design & Digital Technologies

At Torbanlea State School, our Technologies program empowers students to become creative, confident and capable problem‑solvers in a rapidly changing world.

Aligned with the Australian Curriculum: Technologies, our program integrates Design and Technologies and Digital Technologies, enabling students to apply design thinking, computational thinking and real‑world skills to authentic and meaningful challenges.

🎯 Our Vision for Technologies Learning

We aim to develop students who:

  • 🌏 Understand how technologies impact people and environments, now and into the future
  • 💭 Think creatively and critically to design solutions to real needs and opportunities
  • 💻 Use digital tools and coding to create, communicate and innovate with confidence
  • 🤝 Work collaboratively and manage projects from investigation through to evaluation

Our Technologies program encourages curiosity, innovation and responsibility while preparing students for future learning and work pathways.

🧩 Technologies at Torbanlea – Two Interconnected Strands

Our curriculum is built around the two strands of the Technologies learning area:

🛠️ Design and Technologies

Students investigate, design, create and evaluate designed solutions that address real‑world needs. Through hands‑on challenges, they explore how technologies influence society, the environment and the economy.

Key learning experiences include:

  • ✏️ Design thinking and understanding how products and systems are developed
  • 🔧 Project work using materials, tools and production skills
  • 🌱 Consideration of sustainability, ethics and user needs
  • 📋 Collaborative project management from concept to evaluation

Examples at Torbanlea include:
Engineering challenges, product design tasks, simple mechanical systems and sustainable materials projects.

💻 Digital Technologies

Students learn how digital systems work and how to use computational thinking to create digital solutions to authentic problems.

Key learning experiences include:

  • 🖥️ Exploring hardware, software and digital systems
  • 🤖 Coding and algorithms using tools such as Beebots and visual programming environments
  • 🎮 Creating digital solutions such as animations, simple games, simulations and digital media
  • 🔐 Developing digital literacy and online safety skills, including responsible technology use

Examples at Torbanlea include:
Beebot coding challenges in the early years, block‑based programming, digital design projects and robotics integration.

🚀 A Connected, Future‑Focused Program

🎓 Partnership with UniSC (STEM Enrichment)

Torbanlea State School’s Technologies learning is enriched through an ongoing partnership with the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC).

UniSC specialists support our STEM learning experiences, bringing real‑world expertise into classrooms and broadening students’ exposure to future‑focused technologies, innovation and problem solving.

This partnership supports learning by:

  • ✅ Providing expert input into STEM learning
  • ✅ Increasing student engagement in higher‑order thinking and real‑world challenges
  • ✅ Connecting classroom learning with university‑level science and technology research

🏗️ Excursions and Industry Partnerships

Our Technologies program is brought to life beyond the classroom through real‑world learning experiences with Downer Group’s Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP).

Students explore:

  • Engineering and design processes
  • Sustainable technology practices
  • How large‑scale manufacturing applies classroom learning

In addition, Downer specialists visit our school to deliver engaging sessions focused on environmental sustainability and responsible technology practices. These experiences connect students with industry professionals and inspire them to see how their skills can shape the future.

🔗 Integration Across Learning Areas

Technologies learning at Torbanlea is deeply connected to other curriculum areas, supporting rich, interdisciplinary learning:

  • Mathematics – measurement, data, algorithms and spatial reasoning
  • 🔬 Science – systems, forces, materials and investigation skills
  • 🎨 The Arts – design elements, media creation and digital storytelling
  • 🌍 HASS – understanding the impact of technologies on communities and environments

📚 Curriculum Highlights by Stage
