🎨 The Arts at Torbanlea State School

At Torbanlea State School, The Arts enrich student learning by inspiring creativity, expression and cultural understanding. Aligned with the Australian Curriculum: The Arts, our program supports students to engage as both artists and audiences through meaningful making, responding, performing and presenting across a range of art forms.

Through The Arts, students develop confidence, imagination and technical skills, helping them interpret, express and communicate their understanding of the world.


🌟 What The Arts Includes

The Australian Curriculum: The Arts is made up of five interconnected art subjects, all explored at Torbanlea State School:

  • 💃 Dance – using purposeful movement to express ideas, stories and emotions
  • 🎭 Drama – creating, performing and responding to dramatic works
  • 🎬 Media Arts – exploring media language, technologies and storytelling
  • 🎵 Music – developing skills in listening, performing and composing
  • 🖌️ Visual Arts – creating and responding to artworks using a range of media and techniques

Learning experiences involve making and responding, where students:

  • Create and present artworks
  • Explore artistic techniques and practices
  • Think critically about artistic choices
  • Engage with arts from diverse times, places and cultures

🎼 Arts Learning at Torbanlea

At Torbanlea State School:

  • 👩‍🎨 The Arts is taught as a specialist learning area by Mrs Stacey Baxter, our specialist Arts teacher
  • 🎤 Through practical performance and creative activities, students build technical skills, confidence and artistic expression
  • 🔗 The Arts connects with other curriculum areas to deepen learning, including:
    • 📖 English – storytelling, communication and expression
    • 🌏 HASS – cultural meaning, identity and community
    • 🔢 Mathematics – pattern, form, shape and structure

This integrated approach supports students to make meaningful connections across their learning.


🖤💛❤️ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Perspectives

Our Arts program actively supports the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures Cross‑Curriculum Priority of the Australian Curriculum.

Students explore the distinctive and ongoing contributions of First Nations Australians to the arts, including:

  • Traditional and contemporary dance, music and visual art
  • Storytelling and cultural expression
  • Diverse ways of knowing, thinking and doing

Through these experiences, students develop respect for cultural identity, heritage and the role of the arts in sharing stories and knowledge.


🎤 Arts Enrichment and Performance Opportunities

Torbanlea State School offers additional opportunities for students to extend their artistic talents through Speech and Drama as part of our Excellence Program.

Students may:

  • 🎭 Participate in specialised coaching and rehearsal sessions at school
  • 🏆 Perform at events such as the Maryborough Eisteddfod, building confidence in public speaking and performance
  • 🤝 Engage with students from across the region, fostering collaboration, teamwork and artistic growth

These experiences support students to shine both on and off the stage.

In line with the Australian Curriculum, The Arts learning takes place across all primary year levels, building sequentially as students progress through the school.

As students develop their skills and understanding, they are given opportunities to:

  • Perform in school and community events
